School of Nature Conservation

School of Nature Conservation, Beijing Forestry University, was jointly established by the Ministry of Education and State Forestry Administration of the People Republic of China in December 2004. It is the only school that focuses on professional training in nature conservation and nature reserve management in China. Ten years of unyielding efforts has brought great achievement in teaching & education, scientific research, social service and culture heritage in the field of the development and management of nature reserves, wildlife conservation and wise use, wetland conservation and management.

2. Faculty Members

   There are 44 staffs in the school, including 13 professors and 17 associate professors. Besides, 6 outstanding experts have been appointed as visiting professors. Among the faculty members, there are one outstanding youth talent awarded by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, three awarded as New Century Talents by the Ministry of Education, one Beijing Distinguished Teacher awarded by Beijing Municipality, one excellent teacher awarded by Baosteel Education Fund, as well as two outstanding youth talent and one Distinguished Teacher awarded by Beijing Forestry University.

 

In addition, the staffs have been appointed as the key advisory positions at national and international organizations, which including:

Secretary General of Nature conservation and environment discipline supervising committee by Ministry of Education;

Vice Chair and Secretary General of National Wetland Science Committee;

Panel member of the national wetland park (State Forestry Administration), national nature reserve evaluation (3 for State Forestry Administration, and 1 for Ministry of Environment Protection);

Committee member for wetland conservation national standard; Ten professors have been serve for international academic journals as editorial members; and 12 staff are appointed as the key position for national associations for nature conservation, e.g. Ecological Society of China, China Ornithological Society, Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, etc.

3.Disciplines

The School has been credited for doctorate and master training programs in 3 disciplines: e.g., Wildlife Protection and Utilization, Science of Nature Conservation, and Wetland Ecology.

 

1Wildlife Protection and Utilization

Discipline of Wildlife Protection and Utilization was set up in 2000, and was awarded as Key Disciplines by Beijing Municipality in 2006, and promoted as National Key Disciplines by the Ministry of Education in 2007. Currently, five professors, eight associate professors, four lecturers and two teaching assistants are employed. Key area of studies for this discipline including:

2Science of Nature Conservation

Science of Nature Conservation was credited in 2002. Four professors, two associate professors and a lecturer are currently employed for this discipline, with the focus of the following studies:

3Wetland Ecology

Wetland Ecology was set up in 2014. Currently, four professors, four associate professors, six lecturers and one teaching assistant are employed, key area of studies including:.

Wetland Biogeochemical Process and Global Climate Change

Wetland Biodiversity Conservation

Wetland Recovery and Restoration

4. Education

The school has now conduct full range of degree or diploma programs. At present, there are 161 undergraduate students, 136 Master degree students, 71 (Distance Learning Master of Agricultural Extension), and 48 Ph.D. students (including 7 international students) are studying at the School.

 

In 2006, the school recruited its first group of undergraduate students, majored in wildlife and nature reserve science.

 

The undergraduate major “Wildlife and Nature Reserve Management” has been awarded as one of the National Specialized Training Program by Ministry of Education, and is one of the State-level Distinctive Programs. The Undergraduates Supervising Mechanism has been awarded as first prize of BFU Excellent Teaching Achievement, and second prize of Beijing Higher Education Teaching Achievement. Project “multi-universities platform construction and practice of field teaching and study for biological education” has been awarded as first prize of 7th teaching achievement of Beijing.

 

10 laboratories including nature reserve planning and design, zoology, dendrology, wetland ecological process have been established, combined with 11 field research stations in national nature reserves, including the Upper Reach of Luan River in Hebei, East Dongting Lake in Hunan and Wuyi Mountain in Fujian.

 

The quality of students has been widely recognized. There are 137 undergraduate students received their Bachelor’s degree since 2010, with a employment rate of 97.3%, in which 51.8% continued for graduate studies. Some were enrolled in distinguished university in Hongkong and US, while some devoted themselves in nature reserves. These undergraduate students has got 24 undergraduate scientific research innovation projects (including 10 national and 1 provincial projects) and 23 summer social practice projects at different level(including 153 undergraduates, covering 75% of all students), who have published 17 scientific papers (4 were cited in Web of Science). In addition, three students were awarded as Beijing Excellent Student, three students were awarded as Beijing Excellent Student Cadre, and 7 students got national scholarship. A class was awarded as Beijing Excellent Class. 

5.Scientific Research

The School has set its objectives based on scientific research, which targeted on national needs in national protected area development and wildlife conservation program, as well as national wetland conservation and management program.

 

More than 440 key research projects have been conducted, including The National Natural Science Fund projects, National Science and Technology Support Project, Forestry Public Welfare Projects, 973 Basic Science Projects, and State Forestry Administration Key Research Projects, with total research funding more than 100 million CNY, which led to 400 publications (140 cited in Web of Science), 20 books, 15 patents, and 6 national standers. The school has got 2 Youth Scientific Innovation Team building Projects. 

6. Research Platform Development

1Interim Secretariat of the National Partnership for East Asian — Australasian Flyway

The Partnership for the Conservation of Migratory Waterbirds and the Sustainable Use of their Habitats in the East Asian — Australasian Flyway (Flyway Partnership), was launched on 6 November 2006, represents an important new step in international efforts of government, governmental organization, NGO and international organization. The flyway, covers 22 countries, is the habitat of more than 55 million migratory water birds. China officially joined the partnership in March, 2008, with 20 wetland nature reserves as the flyway network sites. The Interim Secretariat of the national partnership for the East Asia-Australasia Flyway is hosted by School of Nature Conservation.

2) China Great Bustard Conservation and Monitoring Network

Great Bustard is a rare and endangered species, and has been listed as national first-grade protected wild animals. Commissioned by the State Forestry Administration, Beijing Forestry University established China Great Bustard Conservation and Monitoring Network. The network aims to mobilize all parties for the conservation and management of the Great Bustard and its habitat, through conducting collective monitoring programs, and assessing population threats, developing and implementing long-term conservation plans.

3) China Cat Conservation and Monitoring Network

With the support of Department of Wildlife Conservation and Nature Reserve Management of State Forestry Administration, China Cat Protection and Monitoring Network was launched in 2009, with its secretariat hosted by Beijing Forestry University. The network will actively organize and coordinate research, monitoring and conservation programs at key cat distribution nature reserves, and introduce international advanced techniques and methodologies.

4Conservation and Reintroduction Cooperative Group for Przewalski’s Horse

In 2002, the Department of Wildlife Conservation of State Forestry Administration established Conservation and Wild Reintroduction Cooperative Group for Przewalski’s horse in Beijing Forestry University, which collaborated with Xinjiang Wild Horse Breeding Center, Xinjiang Mountain Kalarmaili Ungulate Nature Reserve Station, Gansu Wuwei Endangered Animal Breading Center, and Gansu Dunhuang West Lake National Nature Reserve. By now, the cooperative group has already promoted research about wild horse behavior, physiology, nutriology, reproduction, genetic diversity, and parasites control, obtaining great achievements, which effectively promoted the conservation and reintroduction of Przewalski's horse, creates a strong base for the wild Przewalski's horse population.

5) Wildlife Research Institute of Beijing Forestry University

The Wildlife Research Institute was established in 2009 with the support and supervision of major leaders from relevant sectors of State Forestry Administration, as well as domestic and international experts. The institute is affiliated to the School of Nature Conservation.

6Center for forest carbon accounting and monitoring of Beijing Forestry University

The Center for forest carbon accounting and monitoring of Beijing Forestry University was established in 2011 with support and supervision of State Forestry Administration and Beijing Forest University.

7Wetland Research Center of Beijing Forestry University

In order to fulfill Ramsar Convention and Conservation & restoration of wetland ecosystem, Wetland Research Center of Beijing Forestry University was set up in 2014, with studies focus on wetland biodiversity conservation, convention fulfillment, wetland and climate change, wetland restoration, engineering design, wetland monitoring & assessment, and management & policy.

7.Social Services

Integrated with teaching and scientific research, the school has provided social service of experts consulting and scientific support on nature reserve planning and eco-civilization construction. The school has drafted more than 30 reports, plans and standards, and taken charge of 93 projects with a fund more than 30,000,000, which also anticipates the industry. With advantage in research and education, the school has developed good cooperation with quite a lot administrations and organizations, and hold 5 training courses, e.g. Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve Administration senior training, Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve Administration capacity building and promotion training. The school has also embraced 109 staffs from nature reserves as Distance Learning Master of Agricultural Extension, included 38 graduated.

 

Integrated education with research, targeted on national needs, the school has provided social services to governments, governmental agencies and nature reserves on nature conservation, ecosystem management, and eco-civilization development. More than 30 policy issue papers, national strategies, and protocols have been provided to the central government, as a result of the 93 contracted projects with a total budget of 30 million CNY. The school also provided professional training programs to Jiuzhaigou, the Hoh Xil national nature reserves, as well as several training programs to the wetland managers. Currently, the school provides distance learning Master program to nature reserve staff, with 109 staff enrolled in, and 38 received their degree.

8. International Cooperation and Exchange

The School has developed solid bilateral cooperation with Oxford University, Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology, University of Illinois, University of Kent and Australian National University, as well as project cooperation with international organizations, e.g. IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) , WWF (World Wildlife Fund), WPA (World Pheasant Association). SNC has also hosted the first National Forum for Nature, the 10th Clonal Plant Workshop, Crane Protection and Sustainable Agriculture Conference, and the first International Great Bustard Conservation Conference, and involved in the East Asian - Australasian Flyway network, Australia China Environment Partnership Program on wetland protection & management, and Sino-Germany wetland biodiversity conservation program. SNC became the only partner of Water Footprint Network in 2009 and a member of the Yellow Sea Committee.

 

Moreover, the staff and students are encouraged to participate in international conference and academic exchanges. Till now, 6 graduate students have been supported to study abroad by China Scholarship Council, 16 graduate students have been abroad for study communication, and 14 teachers have been supported as visiting scholar in foreign university, and more than 50 person/time have been to U.S., Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, Denmark, India etc. for international conferences.

9.Board of Directors

Board of directors of the school was formed in July 20th , 2007. It provides guidance on key development issues of the school, and has been the bridge of the school to the society. The board consists of administrators of State Forestry Administration, provincial Forestry Bureau, key nature reserves, as well as representatives of international organizations, national research institutions. The board of directors consist 100 members that represent 79 organizations. The current chairman of the board is Mr. Zhao Xuemin, the former vice minister of State Forestry Administration.

10.Future Perspectives

Nature conservation is the basis for sustainable development, and wildlife conservation, nature reserve development and management has become an international common interest. The National 12th Five Year Development Plan attached great importance to ecological development and nature conservation. The third Plenary Session of the 18th CCP decided to set ecological civilization development as national strategies, which called for respect nature, following nature rules, conservation and restoration of nature. The new strategies offered enormous opportunities for the school.

With the progress of the “National Wildlife Conservation and Nature Reserve Development Program” and “National Wetland Conservation Program”, the school will play a more important role in specializing higher education, scientific research, social service and culture transmission on nature reserve construction, nature resource management, wetland protection and restoration, and wildlife conservation.
